January 15, 2020. Shanghai – Outstanding talent had some 230 full-time job opportunities and 60 internships to choose from at the CEIBS Career Development Centre’s 2020 MBA recruitment fair today. This year, the fair attracted more than 90 multinational and Chinese companies to our Shanghai campus from a variety of sectors, including financial services, industrial products, technology, consulting and healthcare.

In an opening speech, CEIBS Vice President and Dean Ding Yuan shared the school’s recent achievements, including both MBA and GEMBA programmes being globally ranked top 5 in 2019 by the Financial Times, and the employment rate for MBA 2019 graduates reaching 94.3% – the highest in 10 years.

The majority of participating companies at the fair were industry leaders and long-standing partners of the school, such as 3M, Adidas, Amazon, Apple, Bayer, Burger King, Bank of China Investment Management, Cifi, Deloitte, Ford, Fosun, Geely, Henkel, Hilti, Industrial Securities, Intel, JD Logistics, Johnson & Johnson, KPMG, Legend Capital , Lilly China, Michelin, Nike, Novartis, OPPO, PINGAN Asset Management, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Starbucks, UBS, Vivo, Walmart, WuXi AppTech, Vision Overseas, and YUYUAN Inc.

In addition to multinational companies’ continuing desire to recruit CEIBS MBA students, demand from Chinese local enterprises has also been very strong, and domestic firms represented 52% of all companies attending this year. To keep pace with hiring trends and meeting the rising needs of local companies for high-quality talent, the Career Development Centre (CDC) has been working to build a shared platform to bring enterprises and MBA students together. This year, the CDC will host the Chinese Enterprise Forum for the third consecutive year.

The CDC also held a ‘Recruitment Fair Prep Week’ to help students have more positive and meaningful discussions during the fair. A series of sessions and workshops with HR professionals answered students’ questions and helped hone their communication, interview and cover letter writing skills.

The CDC also integrates various resources to provide strong support for international students. One such initiative, the CEIBS International MBA Student Internship Programme, aims to offer more internship opportunities for those who want to pursue their career with Chinese companies. Meanwhile, in addition to established overseas treks such as in Singapore, India and the United States, the CDC ran the Dubai Market Exploration Trek for the first time last year. This March, a new trek to Denmark will also be arranged to help students get a better understanding of the business development and talent hiring trends of corporations in overseas markets.

For the CEIBS community, 2019 was a significant milestone for the school. We hosted a series of forums in Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, Zurich, Accra, Singapore, Boston, London, Munich, Paris and Brussels to celebrate the 25^th anniversary of CEIBS. We stayed true to our mission of bringing China and the rest of world closer together, and in advancing cooperation in economic globalisation.

In 2019, both our MBA and EMBA programmes featured amongst the top five in the Financial Times’ global rankings, putting CEIBS on par with world-renowned business schools. CEIBS has now forged partnerships with three leading business case libraries in the world – Harvard Case Library, Ivey Publishing, and The Case Centre – to help contribute Chinese knowledge to global management education. In addition, the completion of the Zurich campus expansion will further consolidate our operations at our five locations (Shanghai, Shenzhen, Beijing, Accra and Zurich) across three continents (Asia, Europe and Africa).

While travelling across the world to host forums and seek the latest business philosophies, we launched a diverse range of courses at each of our campuses, such as the Key Talent Programme for Chinese Companies Going Global, the Global CEO Programme, and the Fintech Programme. These programs aim to integrate knowledge across disciplines to help business leaders better predict global business trends and uncover opportunities for development.

Mei Yiqi, the late President of National Tsinghua University, once noted, “What makes a university great is not its magnificent buildings, but a team of erudite scholars.” While cultivating management expertise, our faculty strive to keep this spirit alive. In 2019, CEIBS faculty, well-versed in both Chinese and Western cultures, topped Elsevier’s World’s Most-Cited Chinese Researchers list in the category of “Business, Management and Accounting” for the fifth consecutive year. Furthermore, they authored a number of quality papers that won international academic awards, and also published a series of books on the theme of CEIBS Faculty’s Insights into Cutting-edge Topics, a special anniversary gift to the school.

With the support of the Shanghai Municipal Government, CEIBS took the lead in building the Global Platform of China Cases. In its first six years, it has housed more than 1,400 such cases. During this period, CEIBS also hosted 14 Case Master Development Camps to provide 1,000 business school faculty members from 20 countries with training on case-method teaching. In 2019, CEIBS initiated the Advanced Case Writing Workshop and Case Symposium Campus Tour to promote high-quality case teaching across China, and to share Chinese experiences with the outside world. The CEIBS Lujiazui Institute of International Finance held ten Financier’s Salons, each focused on building Shanghai into a global financial hub. In addition, CEIBS hosted many Master Classes and Executive Forums to help spark discussion, share wisdom, and facilitate knowledge dissemination.

As the only business school in China to originate from government-level collaboration, CEIBS has served as a bridge connecting China, Europe, and the world at large since its inception. Examples include Jean-Pierre Raffarin, a Board Member and Distinguished Professor at CEIBS and a Former Prime Minister of France, was awarded the “Medal of Friendship” by Chinese President Xi Jinping. At the Executive Receptions hosted on the theme of “China and the World: New Era and New Impetus” in both Beijing and Shanghai, Nicolas Chapuis, Ambassador and Head of Delegation of the European Union to China, and Dominique de Villepin, a Former Prime Minister of France and Distinguished Professor at CEIBS, shared their insights with numerous European envoys to China and leaders of multinational companies. Delegations from the Department of European Affairs and Ministry of Foreign Affairs also paid a visit to CEIBS’ Shanghai and Beijing campuses, which shows how attractive CEIBS is as a forum for foreign collaboration.

As a Chinese saying goes, “Far away from our hometown, we feel terribly homesick.” We miss our CEIBS family and would like to connect with them by sending our New Year’s greetings to the 24,239 CEIBS alumni in more than 80 countries. We express our thanks to them for making CEIBS a platform for lifelong learning and making generous donations to the school for teaching, research, and long-term development. Harnessing the endless stream of intellectual capital in the CEIBS community will deliver a huge boost to the reputation of the school.

The New Year’s bell has rung. In the next decade, we will face many challenges which may require companies to develop business model innovations. For this, business schools must nurture students and executives to spur technological innovation and entrepreneurship, drive digital transformation, and assume social responsibility. As we start the new year, let us keep our past successes in our hearts and move forward by working on an exciting new chapter of CEIBS.

December 20, 2019. Shanghai – From fashion and sustainability to finance and mountaineering, CEIBS students and alumni shared a variety of personal interests and stories with us this year. Here are some of our favourites from the past 12 months.

At the beginning of the year, MBA Admissions sat down with MBA2020’s Francesco Cartoni and Jose Urrutia to learn how a chance meeting at a BBQ in Santiago started the pair on a journey of brotherhood and led them to take the China challenge together.

Fellow MBA2020 Mathieu Tse also shared with us his journey from his beginnings in Hong Kong to growing up in French Guiana, studying in Europe and China, and telling us how his experience helped him develop a strong thirst for knowledge, combat sports and entrepreneurship.

This year, we caught up with CEIBS GEMBA alumnus Gary Xiong to hear about his company Little Dragon Bus. In sharing his story with us, he also challenged us to ask the question, is bus sharing really the next big thing?

Earlier this year, Christoph Flink (CEIBS GEMBA2009), Mario Mazzocca (GEMBA2009), Sophia Jiao (GEMBA2018) and Mario Feuerstein (GEMBA2009) took on one of the world’s most spectacular challenges and climbed Mount Kilimanjaro. In this piece, Christoph shared his first-hand account of his experience during their adventure.

On the long list of impressive CEIBS alumni who are helping bring China and the West closer together, MBA2016’s Saken Shayakhmetov stands out. This year, Saken told us how his experience at CEIBS led him to a position at the office of Kazakhstan’s Prime Minister and the opportunity to work on projects that have positively impacted the lives of others.

Originally from Denmark, social entrepreneur and GEMBA2015 alumnus Nikolaj Moesgaard left his homeland roughly 20 years ago in search of new opportunities. In May of this year, Nikolaj spoke with us about how his experience at CEIBS reignited his curiosity to learn and grow and what he is doing to work for a sustainable future.

When vivo’s Seon Hwang moved to Shanghai from his native Korea to do an MBA in 2010, he did so with his mid-to-long term sights set on developing his career in China by helping a Chinese company go global. In 2019, he shed some light on how he is doing just that.

Born and raised in India, MBA2020’s Ketan Arora’s interest in China led him to develop a liking for internet start-ups. In this story, Ketan shared with us how a part-time internship at ByteDance helped him discover what makes the tech company Tik.

MBA2021’s Neil Flynn also took some time in 2019 to reflect on his seven year experience in China. Here, he talks about how being in the right place at the right time in history influenced his journey from working in finance in the UK to studying at CEIBS.

Mayuko Kawata’s pre-MBA life was a self-described atypical one. After moving around a lot as a child, she started career as a stylist doing hair and makeup for models at Los Angeles Fashion Week. In this story, she talked about her career in fashion and how an MBA at CEIBS is helping her design her own runway.

December 16, 2019. Shanghai – We learned a lot from CEIBS faculty in 2019 as our professors contributed a wealth of insights on a wide range of business and management-related topics. Below, we revisit some of the most read CEIBS Knowledge articles from this year.

Just in time for Women’s Day, CEIBS Professor of Management Jean Lee looked back at some of the changes China has experienced over the past forty years, how the role of Chinese women has evolved and how women leaders have left their unique imprints on the development of doing business in China over that time.

Online retailers accounted for 20% of total sales of consumer goods in China last year, with Alibaba and JD.com capturing three quarters of the market share between them. In April, CEIBS Assistant Professor of Marketing Lin Chen examined some of the factors driving China’s e-commerce marketplace and whether or not any new players could break the existing oligopoly.

Despite huge production costs and higher logistics costs than many of its peers, Zara continued to lead the fast fashion industry in profitability in 2019. In this article, CEIBS Professor of Operations and Supply Chain Management Zhao Xiande took a closer look at the company’s supply chain system and to find out what lessons Chinese businesses could learn from the international clothing retailer.

Leaders who appear authentic in the workplace are more likely to gain the trust of subordinates, cultivate open communication, and boost organisational development, but what types of leaders are perceived by employees as authentic? In 2019, CEIBS Assistant Professor of Management Michelle Zheng co-authored this paper which took a deep dive into the ways employees judge leaders’ authenticity.

When Costco unveiled its first store in Shanghai in September, the company’s opening day in China was a scene of chaos – shelves were emptied within an hour, cars had to wait 3 hours to find a parking place, and customers had to queue for two hours at checkouts. In the aftermath of the enormous shopping spree, CEIBS Professor of Marketing Fang Er penned this article on decoding the country’s Costco frenzy.

While there is growing recognition of Chinese companies’ intent to enhance their innovation capabilities, this shift is still very much work in progress and one that managers and entrepreneurs from other parts of the world ought to take note of. In line with this trend, CEIBS Associate Professor of International Business and Strategy Shameen Prashantham wrote this piece on how businesses can leverage China for global innovation.

The positive outcomes of human resource management (HRM) practices, work structures and other processes designed to enhance employee knowledge, skills, attitudes and motivation have been supported by numerous studies, but evidence also indicates that they can also exert negative effects. Earlier this year, CEIBS Associate Professor of Management Han Jian co-wrote this paper examining why some HRM practices have negative effects and when these negative effects occur.

With China becoming a world leader in terms of investment in financial technology, CEIBS Professor of Finance and Accounting Oliver Rui published this article in September in which he asked the question, is fintech poised to replace brick-and-mortar finance?

Also picking up on some of the current trends in e-commerce in 2019, Professor of Economics and Decision Sciences Fang Yue contributed this column in which he offered numerous insights into how businesses can generate value for customers in today’s digital economy.

Finally, previous studies into the degree of compatibility between employee and job characteristics, while enlightening, have largely treated the relation between them as static. In this article, CEIBS Professors Tae-Yeol Kim and Sebastian C. Schuh teamed up with Shanghai University of Finance & Economics’ Yahua Cai to extend this area of research by exploring how changes in person-job fit affect employee work attitudes over time.

December 11, 2019. Shanghai – CEIBS celebrated its 25^th anniversary this year and the past 12 months have been filled with many memorable highlights, exciting firsts and other notable milestones. We recap some of the top stories below.

For two days in January, CEIBS’ Shanghai campus played host to more than 300 decision makers from business schools around the world as part of the 2019 EFMD Conference for Deans & Directors General – marking the first time in the conference’s 46-year history that the event was held outside of Europe. As CEIBS President Li Mingjun stated in his welcome address at the event, the gathering was a great opportunity for CEIBS to “learn from our peer schools and colleagues, and showcase CEIBS’ role in contributing to China business education and practices.”

In late January, CEIBS reaffirmed its position as one of the world’s leading business schools when its MBA rose three places to #5 in the Financial Times’ ranking. Along with similar success for the school’s Global EMBA programme, this achievement meant CEIBS held two global top 5 rankings from the FT simultaneously for the first time.

CEIBS received even more good news in January, as nine faculty members made academic publisher Elsevier’s list of Most Cited Chinese Researchers in the category of Business, Management and Accounting. As a result, 2019 became the fifth consecutive year in which CEIBS featured prominently on the list, solidifying its reputation in the area of academic research.

The 2019 CEIBS Insights Forum series kicked off in Boston in mid-May, with American and Chinese executives and scholars coming together to discuss the topic of digital innovation and its impact on global business and economics. The series continued throughout the summer and into early autumn with similar events taking place in Munich, Brussels, London and Paris.

The school’s Career Development Center (CDC) released the CEIBS MBA 2019 Career Report in August. Amongst other highlights included in the report, the job acceptance rate for CEIBS MBA graduates hit a 10-year high in 2019, while more than 80% of those successfully achieved a career switch – changing their function, industry, or both.

In September, CEIBS Distinguished Professor and Former Prime Minister of France Jean-Pierre Raffarin was presented with the Medal of Friendship. The award is given to foreigners who have made outstanding contributions to China’s modernisation, have engaged in exchange and co-operation between China and the international community and have worked towards the maintenance of world peace.

Also in September, CEIBS President Li Mingjun was awarded the National Commemorative Medal during a special ceremony at the school’s Shanghai campus. The medal was issued in commemoration of the 70^th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and in recognition of recipients’ outstanding contributions to the PRC and to the development of socialist modernisation.

CEIBS officially doubled the size of its campus in Switzerland in October with the inauguration of a brand new building at the school’s location on the picturesque shores of Lake Zurich. Speaking at the opening ceremony, CEIBS President (European) Professor Dipak Jain noted that the expansion “illustrates the school’s upward trajectory and further strengthens our ability to bring China and Europe closer through business learning.”

On November 15, more than 1,000 alumni, students, faculty, staff and other guests gathered at the school’s Shanghai campus for the CEIBS 25^th Anniversary Celebration Gala. CEIBS President Li Mingjun used the occasion to remark that “CEIBS should strive to be not only a world leading business school, but also an expert in Chinese management education” and to call on everyone to work together for a better future.

Just three days later, CEIBS’ Global EMBA programme retained its fifth-placed spot in the Financial Times’ 2019 Executive MBA ranking. Commenting on the school’s achievement, CEIBS Vice President and Dean Ding Yuan stated that, “As a business school rooted in China, CEIBS’ success in ranking in the top five for two consecutive years highlights the rise of management education in China and Asia. It also shows the school’s efforts in promoting globalisation have paid off.”

Also in November, CEIBS officially announced a new partnership with the Harvard Case Library to help bring even more of the school’s 900+ China-focused cases to the global body of management expertise. The achievement makes CEIBS one of only 29 partners worldwide to work with the Harvard Case Library.

December 9, 2019. Shanghai – It was a big year for CEIBS in the news as our faculty weighed in on a wide range of business-related topics, from globalisation and the China-US trade dispute to fintech and the shared economy. We take a look back at some of what they had to say.

In January, CEIBS Associate Dean (Europe) and Professor of Management Katherine Xin shared with CNNMoney Switzerland her expectations for the global economy on the side-lines of the World Economic Forum’s annual event in Davos.

CEIBS’ MBA programme climbed to #5 in the Financial Times’ 2019 global ranking in February and CEIBS Associate Dean (Research) and Professor of Finance and Economics Xu Bin talked with Nikkei Asian Review about the significance of CEIBS’ achievement and the need for business schools to keep pace with changes in the global economic landscape.

In March, CEIBS Distinguished Professor and former WTO Director-General Pascal Lamy spoke with CGTN about some of the challenges currently facing the WTO.

Also in March, CEIBS Distinguished Professor and former French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin penned this op-ed for China Daily on the importance of co-operation in tackling today’s global issues.

Before the month was out, CEIBS Vice President and Dean Ding Yuan also contributed this piece to Caixin Global about China’s newly approved foreign investment laws.

In April, CEIBS Associate Professor of International Business and Strategy Shameen Prashantham emphasised the necessity of winning over internal stakeholders to foster start-up engagement in this article published in the Economist Intelligence Unit.

The annual Lujiazui Forum returned to Shanghai in June 2019, during which CEIBS Lecturer in Economics Wu Ho-wei spoke with CGTN about how new economic policies are driving development in the Yangtze River Delta region.

In July, Dalian played host to the WEF’s Annual Meeting of the New Champions and CEIBS Vice President and Dean Ding Yuan met with China Daily during the event to discuss a number of China's economic policies.

China’s Fosun made numerous headlines this year and CEIBS Professor of Finance and Economics Oliver Rui shared his thoughts on some of the group’s recent outbound investments as part of this feature in Forbes.

Share biking remains a big business in China and CEIBS Assistant Professor of Marketing Chen Lin caught up with the Financial Times to discuss HelloBike’s strategy for grabbing a larger share of the market.

Artificial intelligence remained highly topical in 2019 and CEIBS Lecturer of Strategy Bai Guo talked with Business Standard about the impact of machine learning on job creation in the finance sector.

With the US-China trade dispute wearing on, CEIBS Associate Dean and Professor of Economics Bala Ramasamy was quoted by Time magazine’s website in September about the prospect of either side emerging as the winner.

Ahead of French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to China in November, CEIBS Vice President and Dean Ding Yuan spoke with Les Echos (in French) and shared his predictions for the future of China-Europe economic co-operation.

Also in November, CEIBS Associate Dean and Professor of Economics Zhu Tian discussed with South China Morning Post the prospects of China producing a Nobel Prize winner.
