From the rolling hills of Switzerland to online retail giant Tmall, family-run Swiss chocolatier Läderach has taken their authentic business to new heights. In this recently recorded webinar, CEIBS Professor Emeritus Chiang Jeongwen talks with Läderach’s David Läderach and Danny Qi about the highs and lows of the company’s journey into China’s e-commerce market. Moderated by CEIBS Zurich Campus CEO Dr. Robert Straw.

Introduction

The deepening of trade and economic ties between China – the world’s largest manufacturer – and Germany – a long-established manufacturing powerhouse – has fostered increased cooperation in the manufacturing industry, especially in the automotive sector. According to statistics, Chinese companies’ investment in the German auto industry made up 15% of their total investment in Germany in the past decade.

At the same time, the robustness of German cars sales in China this year stands in sharp contrast to generally sluggish demand in the international auto market as a result of the impact of COVID-19. Globally, the auto industry is rapidly brewing up a storm of change, partly in response to the shock of the pandemic and partly due to the industry’s transition from internal combustion engine vehicles to smart electric vehicles. 

Given the promising prospects for China-Germany cooperation in the auto industry, how should the two sides give full play to their respective advantages and play the role of game changers to seek win-win results and provide new impetus for their next round of economic collaboration?

Introduction

The pandemic as a “black swan” event has accelerated the restructuring of the global economic landscape and jolted the world into a new round of changes. Digital transformation and industrial upgrade have not only triggered intense international competition, but have also raised higher bars for the innovation of technologies and business models. Known as the country of innovation, Switzerland has enjoyed first-mover advantages in multiple fields, including life sciences, mechanical manufacturing and FMCG, and hosts a wealth of innovative “hidden champions”. At the same time, China has begun to flex its muscles in emerging high-tech areas such as artificial intelligence and big data and boasts a vast consumer market as the country shifts its strategy from “Made in China” to “Intelligent Manufacturing in China”. Meanwhile, traditional Chinese enterprises are seeking to innovate with business models and integrate online and offline channels, so as to break down barriers facing conventional sectors like manufacturing and consumer durables. While Switzerland is recognised as the cradle of high-end manufacturing, its traditional industries are also confronted with the challenge of breaking new ground as they move forward.

So, how should China and Switzerland collaborate in the commercial application of innovative technological achievements and market sharing? As the consumer-based internet gathers momentum, how can the two countries work to identify the key to the development of the industry-oriented internet? And, how should innovative Swiss SMEs seize opportunities to tap into the Chinese market?

About the workshop

What kind of career switch is possible for MBAs after graduation? Where should you start with career planning? How can you put yourself in a superior position in the eyes of recruiters? And how can you balance both short-term and long-term career goals?

Following an introduction to our MBA programme, we will offer an overview of the CEIBS MBA Career Development Centre (CDC), including how the CDC connects the business community with students, and how we work individually with students to achieve their career goals. We will also deliver a brief introductory career planning workshop – one of the initial workshops for CEIBS MBAs, designed to get students to understand the importance of honing in on your career goal, and thinking more strategically about how to achieve it. In the closing session, we invite MBA alums to share their career paths and CEIBS MBA experience.
