August 10, 2020. Shanghai – The 2020-2021 full-time job recruitment season for CEIBS MBAs officially kicks off today! Nearly 180 graduates with outstanding academic performance, cross-cultural leadership skills and international perspectives will start their post-MBA journey in April, 2021.

Starting today, full-time positions from a variety of companies will be posted through CEIBS’ internal career portal. Then, starting in September, leading companies from various industries will come to CEIBS’ Shanghai campus to introduce company strategy and talk about their talent development programmes.

In the previous recruitment cycle, more than 1,000 full-time jobs from nearly 400 companies were posted on CEIBS’ Career Development Centre (CDC) platform, covering a wide range of industries such as technology, financial services, healthcare, consulting, manufacturing (industrial products), consumer packaged goods, retail, energy and real estate.

The CEIBS MBA programme is ranked #5 in the Financial Times’ 2020 global MBA rankings. As the first career development centre in mainland China, CEIBS CDC continues to focus on working with recruiters and the business community as a whole, both to support key talent development issues, as well as to build platforms and initiatives to effectively anticipate and address critical business issues.

July 25, 2020, Shanghai – TEDxCEIBS 2020 was broadcasted live from the Poly Grand Theatre today. Under the banner of ‘Becoming: Me, Us, More’, eight speakers from different industries shared how this year’s theme resonated with them. We heard about how the process of becoming touches on topics such as calmness, enthusiasm, persistence, studying, understanding, science, life and sports. Read on for this year’s highlights.

Our first guest speaker was Rong Hai, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Xi’an Starfish Technology Investment Holdings. Decades of ups and downs in the business world made him realise how to live like a king.

“The real king should be a person with a strong heart, rather than one defined by wealth,” Rong reflected.

The next guest speaker on stage was Professor of Cello Chen Weiping. As a true lover of the cello for over 30 years, he encouraged everyone to find their own passion, to deepen their understanding of life, and to enjoy the nourishment and freedom of love.

Over the past fifteen years, China’s lack of self-sufficiency in terms of raw materials used to make semiconductor displays has become increasingly prominent. As a practitioner of the localisation of China’s semiconductor material industry, Kunshan Chimei Material Technology Chairman Huang Yuan described the semiconductor display industry from initial entry to industrial layout, showing us the charm of persistence and the spirit of firmness.

Dr. Liu Xianquan, Professor of Criminal Law at East China University of Political Science and Law, was the fourth guest speaker of the evening. In his 18-minute speech, he emphasised the value of reading and talked about his extensive teaching career. As a Professor of Criminal Law, he has taught his students more than just straightforward law terms, sharing with them his philosophy on life. As the recipient of multiple teaching awards over the past 20 years, Prof. Liu said that working tirelessly and earnestly will lead to learning without limits.

Next to take the stage was William Li, Founder, CEO and Chairman of electric vehicle manufacturer NIO. As an entrepreneur in the spotlight, William gradually learned to diagnose problems from the perspectives of others. In his view, he said, courage and execution are the most important qualities, as they allow you to face yourself in the eyes of others and quickly adjust your behaviour to suit the situation.

What secrets are hidden in your body? Xu Tian, Vice President of West Lake University and former Professor of Genetics at Yale University, revealed the “heavenly harmony” of the human body to the audience. Prof. Xu shared how the power of education and innovation are important factors for the continued inheritance of science for future generations. He went on to share his perspective on how interesting biological phenomena are actually simple scientific principles. Prof. Xu’s dream is to practice these scientific principles in order to help the people we love.

Undoubtedly, the most significant event in 2020 is the global coronavirus outbreak. Professor Li Shengqing, Director of the Department of Respiratory Medicine at Fudan University’s affiliated Huashan Hospital, described her experience of taking the initiative to lead a medical team of 210 doctors from Huashan Hospital in Wuhan to fight the virus.

“Difficulties are to be overcome. We will complete the task for sure,” Prof. Li said.

The final guest speaker was famous boxing champion Zou Shiming. Winner of three Olympic medals (bronze in 2004 and gold in 2008 and 2012), Shiming is considered to be China’s most successful boxer of all time. He took to the stage to share how he integrated a boxing philosophy into his life.

“Only by knowing how to advance and when to retreat can you live more freely and magnanimously,” Zou said.

TEDxCEIB2020 was planned and organised by members of the CEIBS MBA Class of 2021. For the first time ever, the event was broadcasted live to over seven million viewers online. In what was a fantastic gathering of industry leaders and innovative minds, TEDxCEIBS will continue to bring together the most impactful ideas in the fields of business, technology, culture, art, education and social services and inspire people with the power to move forward.

Dear CEIBS Community,

Welcome to the second “From the Presidents” of 2020. Under the cloud of COVID-19, it seems that these letters are also a sign of the times. Over the past few months, the COVID-19 pandemic has engulfed the world, claiming the lives of hundreds of thousands of people and dealing a severe blow to the global economy and international order. Wherever you are at this moment, we hope you are safe and sound.

Since the beginning of the outbreak, many of you have been asking about new developments at the school. We hope this letter will give you some insightful news regarding school updates.

Class resumption and innovative operations

Because of COVID-19, we are not yet teaching all programmes in lecture halls. Nevertheless, thanks to the significant progress made in China’s epidemic prevention and control of the virus, CEIBS’ Shanghai campus welcomed back its first group of MBA2021 students in May. At present, MBA courses are being delivered both online and offline. Though other programmes have not yet restarted, waiting doesn’t mean stagnating. Relevant departments have provided students with access to abundant online academic resources; at the same time, they are working on plans for the restart of programmes and coming up with many innovative ways to resume classes.

Since February, the school has organised over 300 online events, including Cloud Sharings, Chief Cloud Forums, VC Seminars, FMBA Professors’ Talks, and HéTalks. These online events have covered a wide range of topics, such as macroeconomics, digital transformation, supply chain management, new retail and leadership, and have captured broad attention amongst multiple audiences. For example, the Hé Talk series has been livestreamed by multiple mainstream media, and has received up to 2 million page views per session. Although the epidemic has temporarily disrupted our community, it has also unexpectedly connected us with more people.

In June, we held a special MBA2020 Virtual Graduation Celebration, the first of its kind in CEIBS’ 26-year history. A total of 168 MBA graduates from 17 countries and regions worldwide gathered online to bid farewell to CEIBS. Though we were far apart, the graduation celebration brought us closer together.

Empowering alumni enterprises

The spread of COVID-19 has posed unprecedented challenges to enterprises around the globe. As an international business school, CEIBS has looked for ways to help alumni enterprises get through the crisis.

Since the beginning of the outbreak, we have integrated content related to enterprises' anti-epidemic efforts into our curriculums. CEIBS faculty members have delved into the impact of the epidemic on the macroeconomy and business operations in light of their respective academic interests. Amongst them, Professors Xu Bin, Juan Fernandez and Zhou Dongsheng, together with other team members, conducted a survey of more than 1,000 enterprises about the impact of the epidemic on business operations in China; Prof. Chen Jieping led the compilation of the 2020 CEIBS Corporate Social Responsibility White Paper, which provides a comprehensive framework for enterprises to understand CSR in this new context. A series of online lectures held by the school have also provided insights for alumni enterprises in their fight against the epidemic. In addition, in order to create more learning opportunities, the school has recently launched a new case study workshop for alumni, during which a CEIBS professor will analyse a successful business and its practices.

Being at the forefront of global management education, CEIBS will keep pace with the times in academic research and curriculums as always. We also welcome our alumni back to study at CEIBS and make it a platform for their lifelong learning.

Networking in the era of online education

In light of the current situation, we have moved a number of courses and activities to virtual settings. The convenience of online platforms has enabled us to include more participants, but going online does not mean impersonal communication. Instead, we are holding webinars and sharing sessions to ensure interaction amongst students and alumni.

In the past few months, we have organised internal sharing sessions for students to compare notes and keep in touch. For new cohorts who have yet to begin, we have also built a platform for learning, sharing and interaction. For example, at the end of June, the EMBA department held a virtual orientation for the EMBA2020 Spring cohort, helping them get to know the school’s culture and curriculum management regulations in advance, and how to quickly fit into the CEIBS community. Subsequently, Shanghai, Beijing and Shenzhen campuses held online sharing events for each class to promote in-depth exchange amongst students.

The CEIBS Alumni Association, regional chapters, and industry associations have also livestreamed various sharing activities, and the combination of online and offline communication has provided more opportunities for alumni to expand their networks.

As the global situation evolves, we will continue to adapt our plans and keep alumni and students engaged in multiple ways. We also encourage the CEIBS community to work together in taking on the challenges posed by the epidemic.

Exploring and deepening international exchange among alumni

To date, CEIBS has set up 64 regional alumni chapters around the world, including chapters in Spain, France, Germany, Switzerland and the UK, all of which are an integral part of the CEIBS community. Over the years, the school has started a series of strategic initiatives to strengthen the international alumni network. In 2019, as part of the school’s 25th anniversary, we hosted forums in cities including Boston, London, Munich and Brussels, and organised alumni gatherings in Singapore and Paris, in an effort to strengthen our international alumni network and enhance exchange amongst alumni around the world.

We are proud that since the COVID-19 outbreak, the CEIBS Alumni Association and regional chapters have maintained efficient communication with alumni worldwide and have contributed to the global fight against the epidemic. Once the epidemic finally subsides, we will further utilise our overseas campuses, and will offer courses and company visits to facilitate international exchange amongst alumni. In the future, one of our key priorities is to maintain intellectual interaction between Chinese and overseas alumni.

As the epidemic continues to spread, we have come to realise that living with the virus may be the new normal. The global economic recession triggered by the pandemic will lead to considerable uncertainties over the future. In the face of tremendous changes, we should see not only the imminent issues, but also the opportunities that come with it. It is our hope that all members of the CEIBS community will have the courage to think outside the box, and become pioneers and leaders in pushing forward in this era.

As many of the CEIBS faculty return to campus, there is a rejuvenated sense of hope. A breeze drifts through the serene corridors, the sun shines down on the white walls, and set against lush vegetation and trees, the CEIBS Pyramid casts a broad shadow over a mirror-like lake. However, the lack of the students’ presence is felt and we look forward to the day we can welcome you back.  May that day come earlier and everything continue to progress forward.

Flashback to Spring/Summer 2020 at CEIBS

July 11, 2020. Shanghai – CEIBS Vice President and Dean Ding Yuan this afternoon participated in the “AI Sustainable Development 2030” roundtable dialogue during a sub-forum as part of the 2020 World AI Conference Summit. Professor Ding also held in-depth discussions about AI-related subjects with other speakers and guests at the forum, which was hosted in Shanghai over three days from July 9 to 11.

The sub-forum focused on the theme of “The Evolution and Trajectory of Global Artificial Intelligence” and was broadcasted live online. During the dialogue, Prof. Ding analysed the possible implications of AI in various dimensions, including human development, technological revolution, educational innovation and commercial applications. He also stressed the necessity to remain cautious about the potential risks associated with AI applications.

Prof. Ding noted during the session that AI is an extension of human intelligence, and is something which is both disruptive and ground-breaking. Using business school education as an example, he said AI could play a significant role in the teaching of some standardised courses – like accounting and finance – and may gradually replace the traditional class-based models.

According to Prof. Ding, while individuals, enterprises and education systems are able to adjust swiftly to cataclysmic disruptions – such as disease – by shifting their businesses online, they are often less willing to adapt to transformations like AI, due to sunk costs and path-dependency. Enterprises, in particular, he continued, need to build their capacities in advance, lest they could face a mismatch between human knowledge and intelligence on the one hand and the social demands on the other. This, he noted, may have severe social consequences.

Prof. Ding further stressed that any technology would be a double-edged sword. Although AI is a highly efficient assemblage of the workings of human brain, the application of it may carry risks that cannot be ignored. How to use it to promote human progress, for example, is an issue for which there is currently no answer and which calls for exploration from all sides, he added.

The “AI Sustainable Development 2030” roundtable dialogue is organised by the Global AI Academic Alliance and AI Young Scientists. Attendees also included Wang Dong, Localisation PM of UNDP Sustainable Development Goals; Tang Shengyong, Executive Vice President of Research Institute of People.cn; and Lyu Baoliang Executive President of Qingyuan Research Institute of Shanghai Jiaotong University. The meeting was chaired by Tian Feng, President of SenseTime Intelligent Industry Research Institute.

The 2020 World AI Conference Summit is the second such event hosted by the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government. This year, the event focused on the theme of “Intelligent Connectivity, Indivisible Community” and brought together government leaders and influential scientists and entrepreneurs in the AI field from around the world to share their views on AI-related technical frontiers, industrial trends and spotlight issues.
