May 13, 2021. Hefei – Remarkable growth is paving the way for thrilling prospects in Anhui and the Yangtze River Delta an audience at the CEIBS 2021 Innovation Forum in Hefei heard today.

The forum, which focused on economic growth, integrated regional development, and industry upgrading, was attended by more than 400 business and academic leaders, policymakers and entrepreneurs.

In his welcome speech, Hefei Vice Mayor Ge Bin pointed out that the city has pursued continuous opening-up and innovation as part of its core strategy in an effort to attract more talent to contribute to the vibrant growth of the region.

Hefei’s commitment to high-quality development, he added, has turned it into one of China’s top 20 economic cities with a GDP of over 1 trillion RMB.

CEIBS Vice President and Co-Dean Zhang Weijiong further underlined the importance of the Yangtze River Delta – one of the most developed regions in China – as well as the role of the school’s community in its local business communities.

“CEIBS is devoted to supporting the growth of companies and entrepreneurs, including the more than 300 alumni in the CEIBS Alumni Association Anhui Chapter who have made significant contributions to the region’s economic development,” he said.

Key to the region’s success, Prof. Zhang continued, has been the synergy between Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui provinces and Shanghai and their ability to give full play to their respective advantages and share their development platforms.

Anhui, in particular, has outpaced its regional peers in recent years, with a remarkable average annual growth rate of 8%, he noted.

CEIBS Professor of Economics Zhu Tian then delivered a keynote speech in which he stated that the government should build a favourable business environment and provide support for industries that have positive spill-over effects, while allowing companies to focus on building their core competences.

“Be it through internal or external circulation, economic growth is ultimately fuelled by a country’s strength, which stems from investment, education and technological progress,” Prof. Zhu said.

During a special sharing session, CEIBS alum Chi Hong introduced six major opportunities for companies in the region, including openings created by China’s national strategy, the optimisation of industry operations, implementation of key projects, market expansion, improvements in the business environment, and technological innovation.

Shanghai state-owned enterprises, in particular, he said, have already tapped into opportunities offered by the Yangtze River Delta by investing nearly 19 billion RMB into 158 projects during the past five years.

Prof. Zhu then moderated a round-table discussion during which participants agreed that the growing integration of the Yangtze River Delta will foster closer ties in the region, creating greater synergy and giving companies access to preferential policies which will enable them to optimise their businesses at both the strategic and industrial levels.

Launched in 2015, the CEIBS Innovation Forum series is aimed at disseminating the latest in management expertise, contributing to China’s regional economic development, and empowering the school’s alumni in upholding social responsibility.

Hefei was the third stop for the CEIBS 2021 Innovation Forum series, which will also visit Xi’an, Liuzhou, Wuhan and Zhuhai later this year.

May 11, 2021. Shanghai – Global recruitment firm Michael Page and China Europe International Business School (CEIBS) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to work together on leadership development, industry insights generation, academic research and exchange.

At a ceremony held at CEIBS Shanghai Campus, CEIBS Vice President and Dean Ding Yuan and PageGroup China Senior Managing Director Rupert Forster exchanged gifts and put pen to paper on the MOU.

During the event, Prof. Ding spoke of his personal admiration for Michael Page and noted that both institutions had co-operated successfully many times in the past, including on a scholarship programme focusing on the skilling, reskilling and upskilling of professionals.

“We have all been working very hard on both sides since December towards this goal, and I’m very confident that this partnership will be a very fruitful one,” he said.

Mr. Forster echoed Prof. Ding’s sentiments on the effort spent to make the partnership possible.

“We are very proud of our brand, and we see CEIBS as a global brand and exactly the kind of organisation we are very proud to work with,” he said, adding, “We have a mission which is creating opportunities and changing lives and I’m really hoping that in the partnership we have with CEIBS we can do just that.”

Following the ceremony, Mr. Forster spoke at a CEIBS Executive Forum in front of an audience from the school’s student and alumni community.

During the event, he shared his observations on developments in China’s talent market, most notably the trend of increasingly sophisticated demands from job seekers in the country, and career advice for CEIBS students.

“Ten years ago, for the most part, employees were asking employers simply what title was on offer and how much they could pay,” said Mr Forster.

“But now, a much bigger range of factors have come into play, such as work-life balance, career development, training, benefits… and this is a challenge employers have to tackle.”

Mr. Forster also shared his suggestions for professionals on maximising their career potential in the long run.

Besides practical job search tips from the perspective of recruiters, Mr. Forster encouraged professionals to develop a growth mind-set to chase potential.

“A growth mind-set is not a silver bullet – you need focus and hard work to back it up,” he said, adding, “But as a learned behaviour, it vastly increases the likelihood of success and your ability to overcome setbacks.”

May 10, 2021. Shanghai — CEIBS Assistant Professor of Organisational Behaviour Michelle Xue Zheng has been named one of the Best 40-Under-40 Business School Professors of 2021 by Poets & Quants.

Prof. Zheng joined CEIBS in 2015 and teaches Organizational Behaviour, Leadership Journey, and Managerial Decision Making across Boundaries. She has introduced numerous innovative teaching techniques to her classes to create more interactive and immersive learning experiences. Her current research includes how emotions and power influence leaders’ behaviours and how power and status shape the effectiveness of apologies and forgiveness in workplace conflict resolution.

In addition to being a well-respected faculty member in the MBA programme at CEIBS, Prof. Zheng’s research has demonstrated how business school professors can and do contribute to greater societal good. Her research has been featured in publications such as Forbes, The Washington Post, and The Atlantic.

In a recent study, Prof. Zheng and her co-authors examined whether mindfulness could neutralise the negative impact of COVID-19 stressors on employees’ sleep duration and work engagement. As part of their research, they conducted a field experiment in Wuhan, China, during the 2020 lockdown, in which they induced a state of mindfulness by asking participants to practice mindfulness continuously for ten days. They also conducted a 10-day daily diary study in the UK. Their results have suggested that mindfulness is an evidence-based practice that can effectively neutralise the negative effects of COVID-19 stressors on sleep and work outcomes. Moreover, Prof. Zheng says she hopes this research can help those who have suffered from the COVID-19 crisis.
