For CEIBS, today is a day of great significance. In 2024, our school will celebrate the 30th anniversary of its founding, a remarkable milestone in its history. Three decades ago, the school was co-founded through close collaboration between the Chinese government and the European Union (EU). Since then, CEIBS has embarked on a visionary journey, navigating through thick and thin with the goal of establishing a business school that offers truly international education in China.
In this relentless pursuit over the past 30 years, CEIBS has evolved from a disseminator to a creator of knowledge, and grown into a leading, world-class business school that ranks amongst the best in the world by steadfastly adhering to its motto of "Conscientiousness, Innovation, and Excellence" and unique positioning of "China Depth, Global Breadth." Committed to facilitating economic and cultural exchange between China, Europe, and beyond, CEIBS has been lauded as "a cradle of excellent executives" and "a role model of EU-China co-operation" by leaders from both China and the EU.
Over the past year, the world has faced myriad global challenges, including escalating geopolitical crises, a sluggish global economy, frequent climate events, and a deteriorating environment, all while the new trends of digitalisation, artificial intelligence, and environmental sustainability inject new momentum into the global economy. Despite these challenges, the CEIBS community has forged ahead and achieved a series of brilliant results to mark an exciting prelude to our 30th anniversary celebrations.
Our Global EMBA programme was ranked #2 worldwide by the Financial Times for the fourth consecutive year, while our MBA programme was again ranked #1 in Asia for the seventh year in a row. In 2023, our 120 full-time faculty members continued to drive the creation and dissemination of cutting-edge management knowledge, and a historic high of 16 CEIBS faculty have made the 2022 list of Highly-Cited Chinese Researchers released by world-leading academic publisher Elsevier. Our 29,600 CEIBS alumni played a pivotal role in various critical sectors of the socio-economic landscape. Meanwhile, CEIBS continued to serve as a bridge for global communication and dialogue with the successful hosting of a pre-International Business Leaders’ Advisory Council for the Mayor of Shanghai (IBLAC) forum and the 9th CEIBS Europe Forum series. In response to China’s dual carbon targets and green energy efforts, the school also debuted our Carbon Information Disclosure Report to demonstrate our unwavering commitment to achieving carbon neutrality.
While this is not an exhaustive list, we are fully aware of the resolute actions, unwavering dedication, diligence, and commitment of the CEIBS community that underpin every one of our incredible accomplishments. Therefore, we would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the CEIBS faculty and staff who have dedicated their time, wisdom, and lifelong effort to the development of the school. Special thanks also go to our alumni, who not only contribute to the school's growth, but also actively engage in entrepreneurial endeavors in the pursuit of social advancement. It is the collective effort of every member of the CEIBS community that drives us forward with great confidence.
In the midst of complex global changes, we know that there will be turbulent days ahead. Nevertheless, we also know that each member of the CEIBS community will have the determination and resolution to navigate through uncertainties and challenges. Everyone in the CEIBS community was greatly saddened to hear of the recent passing of Mr. Jacques Delors, Former President of the European Commission.
Mr. Delors played an important part in our school's history. It was during a meeting between him and Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping, among others, that the idea of a business school in China to share knowledge between the European and Chinese business communities was first proposed, sowing the seeds for the creation of the institution that exists today. Aside from this, of course, Mr. Delors had a long and storied career at the very heart of European politics, filled with innumerable accomplishments, among them being widely seen as the architect of the modern European Union.
Throughout his life and career, Mr. Delors sought to bring people and nations closer together, for which we will forever be grateful. We offer our sincerest condolences to Mr. Delors' family at this time.

CEIBS alumni, faculty, industry leaders, and experts rubbed shoulders in a vibrant weekend of intellectual exploration and professional camaraderie at the 2023 CEIBS European Alumni Reunion in London. Check out some of the highlights here.
In 2023, Sino-French relations have been fully restored following the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic. In April, French President Emmanuel Macron visited China, where he and Chinese President Xi Jinping signed a sweeping 51-point joint declaration; in June, Chinese Premier Li Qiang visited France; in July, the French Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire visited China. These frequent and productive meetings between China and France have successfully opened new avenues for collaboration. Next year, China and France will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, with both sides expecting and aiming for comprehensive, high-quality cooperation in the future.
However, amid a weaker-than-expected post-pandemic recovery, the trends currently facing the global economy are undeniably challenging. The Chinese market itself is facing the multiple pressures of mitigating risks, stabilizing employment, and promoting consumer demand. At the same time, despite these challenges, China's digital economy is developing at an accelerated pace. Emerging industries and digital technology applications in China continue to transform, upgrade, and energise the consumer market. This creates valuable opportunities for French products and services - known for their excellent quality - to enter the Chinese market.
How can French enterprises get a deeper understanding of the particularities and complexities of the Chinese market, so as to better adapt to and integrate in an era of digital transformation？How can Chinese companies fully understand and adapt to the French market, to better "go global" in an era of globalization? This forum will invite representatives from China and France’s governments, business communities, and academic circles to engage in in-depth discussions on these questions and more. In the process, they will promote bilateral business exchanges along with the stable and far-reaching development of Sino-French relations, jointly helping to write a new chapter of cooperation for the future.

In our sixth and last conversation of this series, Markus HERRMANN, Co-Founder and Managing Director, China Macro Group (CMG); (Advisory) Board Member stars and SCCC, Zurich, will be talking to FU Cong, Ambassador and Head of the Mission of the People’s Republic of China to the European Union, Brussels.
In 2019, the EU laid out its revised policy stance vis-à-vis China, making clear that for the Union henceforth, China would be simultaneously a cooperation partner, an economic competitor and a systemic rival “promoting alternative models of governance”. Since then, and further aggravated by how China’s position in the Ukraine war and the Zero Covid policy have been perceived in Europe, relations between Beijing and European capitals have become more complicated indeed. In the economic realms, the exploration of a comprehensive agreement on investment (CAI) between China and the EU was stalled after the European Council adopted sanctions against Chinese individuals and entities in Xinjiang on grounds of human rights violations, to which Chinese government retaliated resolutely.
Against this backdrop, it is noteworthy that in his first press conference in March and recent trip to Europe as China’s new State Councilor and Foreign Minister, Qin Gang struck a notably conciliatory tone. What are the current dynamics in the EU-China relations? What does Beijing think about the EU’s aspirations for “de-risking” and “strategic autonomy”? Is “green” tech the next frontier of competition?
About the speaker:
FU Cong is a career diplomat with extensive experience working in multilateral institutions and specifically in Europe. He spent many years working as a PRC representative to United Nations structures in Geneva and Vienna, holding positions of Deputy Permanent Representative, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary for Disarmament Affairs, working over a decade on the topic of arms control including the role as Director-General of the Department of Arms Control back home in Beijing. As of December, 2022, he has been appointed to Brussels as Ambassador and Head of the Mission of the People’s Republic of China to the European Union.

CEIBS event brings Chinese healthcare trends to Paris
June 1, 2023. Paris, France – CEIBS hosted a healthcare seminar with Professor of Management Eric Bouteiller in central Paris this evening.
Joined by CEIBS alumni and their guests, a group of 18 people came together to discuss the latest trends in the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries in China, led by Prof. Bouteiller, who was visiting France from China.
Prof. Bouteiller shared insights and observations on the trends in the life sciences and healthcare industries in China, before opening the discussion to the room so that others from the industry could pose questions and share their own observations.
With CEIBS alumni as well as industry professionals and doctoral students in attendance, the discussions were animated and thought-provoking, deliberating on topics such as the ageing population in China, drug policies, and patent laws and their impact on healthcare services and providers. Many people in the room had experience in China and Europe and talked about what we could learn from the tendencies that were highlighted by Prof. Bouteiller.
After the talk, the group enjoyed an apéro-style dinner at the M Social Hotel, where discussions continued and people exchanged contact details, promising to keep in touch and connect at further events in Paris and beyond.
Many CEIBS students and alumni have a background in the life sciences and the seminar was the first offline event in Europe to unite those in the field and assist them in growing their professional networks.
CEIBS Alumni Manager for Europe Georgina Unanué said, “Hosting bespoke events for our alumni according to their industry gives them the chance to connect with relevant people which is so valuable when building a professional network. Having a professor such as Eric to share his learnings and insights also gives our alumni the chance to continue learning long after graduation.”

Under Deng Xiaoping, Beijing adhered to the maxim to “hide your strength and bide your time” in foreign affairs, seeking to ensure an international environment conducive to its own development with less active involvement in global politics. First in 2016 in a study session and then in 2018 in a foreign affairs working meeting, Xi laid out his new direction for China’s role in global affairs to “lead the reform of global governance” (引领全球治理体系改革). Reflective of this growing sense of global responsibility and clout, China has been (co-)driving a number of initiatives to reshape the existing US-led international order towards a world order conceived of as a “community with a shared future for mankind” (人类命运共同体), among them the BRICS, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), or the latest three initiatives of the Global Development Initiative (GDI), the Global Security Initiative (GSI), and the Global Civilization Initiative (GSI).
How does Beijing understand the current world order and multipolarity? What roles and options are there for China in a world where it sees a “rising East and a declining West”? How, and with whom does it intend to reshape post-1945 institutions? And what could this mean for global cooperation and economic globalization? Beyond the key global trading blocs, how does China look at ASEAN, the Middle East, India or Africa?
