GEMBA’s Content-Rich India Elective
April 2-6, 2018. Bangalore & Mumbai, India – Concrete lessons from executives of Infosys, Xiaomi and IBM Labs on doing business in India plus classroom lectures that provided insights into the country’s business and socio-political landscape provided a content-rich start to CEIBS Global EMBA India elective in Bangalore. This was complemented by a Mumbai segment which included visits to Tata Group HQ, a Bollywood set and a tour of one of Asia’s largest slums, Dharavi.
A mixed group of CEIBS Global EMBA 2016 participants, CEIBS EMBA alumni and Global EMBAs from IESE benefitted from this module on Immersion in India for Business Success.
An afternoon visit, on the first day, to the 80-acre Infosys Campus provided context about the company’s growth and talent management. According to the company’s Executive Vice President & Global Head of Talent & Technology Operations Binod Hampapur, the average age of the 30,000+ employees at their Bangalore location is 27. He also spoke about the impact India’s education system has on its talent pool and trends in global delivery in light of recent announcements coming out of the US.
There was also a discussion, by Senior Technology Architect Ms. Ananthalakshmi on the implications of blockchain technology on the supply chain. Her presentation was framed within the context of the simple coffee bean. Senior Financial Officer for Xiaomi in Bangalore Denny Hu (CEIBS EMBA alumnus) also shared his experience in establishing a tech venture in India. Xiaomi has racked up more than $1billion in revenue after just two years of operating in India.
These afternoon sessions complemented lectures, given earlier in the day, by CEIBS Professor of Entrepreneurship Rama Velamuri as well as IIMB (Indian Institute of Management Bangalore) Professors G. Shainesh and Rajeev Gowda. The IIMB faculty spoke, respectively, on Winning in India and the Indian Political System.
