Faced with disruption brought about by digitalisation, multinational corporations are realising the value of partnering with external actors – including startups. However, while established corporations and startups do have complementary capabilities that could result in win-win collaborations, in reality, they often find that developing productive partnerships is not straightforward. The very thing that attracts them to each other – their significant differences – also makes it difficult to work together.

In this talk, drawing upon over a decade of research in multiple locations – but with a focus on China – CEIBS Associate Professor of International Business and Strategy Shameen Prashantham provides guidance on how corporations and startups can build mutually beneficial partnerships. Using examples such as Microsoft, BMW, and Unilever, he will discuss the “why”, “how,” and “where” of corporation-startup partnering. The key takeaway of this talk is that to succeed in the age of digital disruption, companies need to develop entrepreneurial, collaborative, and global mind-sets.

About Speaker

Prof. Shameen Prashantham
Associate Professor of International Business and Strategy, CEIBS

Shameen Prashantham is an Associate Professor of International Business and Strategy at CEIBS. Prior to joining CEIBS he was an Associate Professor in International Business & Strategy at Nottingham University Business School China from 2011 to 2015. Before joining NUBS China, Dr. Prashantham spent a decade in Scotland as a doctoral and post-doctoral researcher at Strathclyde University. He is now a core Professor for the CEIBS Global Executive MBA Entrepreneurship and Innovation module.

His research focuses on new venture internationalisation, in particular how startups partner with large multinationals as a means to improve their prospects of innovation and international expansion. His work has been published in California Management Review, Entrepreneurship Theory & Practice, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Management Studies, and Organization Studies. His latest book is Born Globals, Networks, and the Large Multinational Enterprise: Insights from Bangalore and Beyond.
