Jeanne's Journey from Cultural Exploration to CEIBS MBA

CEIBS MBA Student ambassador Jeanne

My name is Jeanne; I was born and raised in France. I’m also a German speaker and, when I turned 18, my knowledge of the German language opened doors for me. I was selected to be a part of a programme studying law in both the Sorbonne in France and the University of Cologne in Germany. I spent four years in this blend of French and German culture, challenging my typically French habits, such as being late, joining protests, greeting with a kiss, eating late and for a long time etc. I loved it.

After this first experience outside of France, I was looking for even greater internationalisation, to learn more about our very diverse world. I got the chance to live in Shanghai for a year. The city's energy, fast-paced changes, and opportunities drew me in, motivating me to learn Chinese.

In the three years that followed, I wished to remain in a cosmopolitan environment. I packed my life into one suitcase and became a nomad, working in Frankfurt, Berlin, Taipei, Kinshasa, Ramallah, Tallinn, and Kuala Lumpur. I saw each chance to stay in a new country as a great opportunity to appreciate the diversity of human experience.

Despite loving these experiences, the idea of settling back in China was always on my mind. I wanted to explore the country more. A friend told me about CEIBS' MBA programme, and I felt it was a unique opportunity, being young, mobile, and wanting to return to China. It was also the right moment for me to start an MBA, giving me the opportunity to explore different career paths.

Three months ago, I started living the MBA student life at CEIBS, and it has been very intense. The various activities, organised by professors, students and the administration, along with opportunities to chat with fellow students, guest speakers, and professionals in forums have been incredibly enriching. Visiting international companies helped me gain valuable insights into the complexities of international business. Participating in student life - from trips to sports tournaments and cultural nights to teamwork – has fostered the development of strong connections and lasting friendships.

Every day of the MBA journey has added and continues to add to my understanding of the world and helps me grasp the global changes occurring in our fast-paced environment. Learning about China and the global economy, navigating accounting and finance rules, and delving into marketing strategies in a Chinese context have contributed to the development of a more complex yet creative mindset. Spending so much time with the same group of people is a great way to better understand others, as well as know myself better.

Joining the MBA programme is a decision I absolutely do not regret. The world is full of opportunities; you just need to seize the ones that come your way. Taking risks and stepping out of your comfort zone leads to personal growth. Unexpected encounters can truly challenge your beliefs, reshaping how you perceive and understand the world.
