Farh, Jiing-Lih Larry

Dr. Jiing-Lih (Larry) Farh is an Honorary Professor and holds the ABN AMRO Chair in Management at the China Europe International Business School (CEIBS). He is also a Professor Emeritus of Management at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). Prior to joining CEIBS in 2016, he served as the chair professor, head of the department of management, and director of the Hang Lung Center for Organizational Research at HKUST from 1993 to 2016. Before that, he was a tenured associate professor of management at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge from 1984 to 1993.
Dr. Farh earned his Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior and Personnel from Indiana University at Bloomington. His research is primarily focused on adapting and applying management theories in Chinese contexts. He is widely recognized for his influential works on Chinese leadership, employee voice and organizational citizenship behavior, guanxi and trust, and the impact of personal values such as traditionality and power distance on employee work behavior. His research findings have been published in esteemed management journals including Administrative Science Quarterly, Academy of Management Journal, Organization Science, Journal of Applied Psychology, Personnel Psychology, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Management, and Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes. His scholarly contributions have garnered over 28,000 citations on Google Scholar and over 9,000 citations on Web of Science.
Dr. Farh has been at the forefront of management research methods education in China. In 1999, he played a pivotal role in co-founding the Research Methods Development Workshop at HKUST alongside Anne Tsui, aimed at training mainland management scholars in modern social sciences research methods. The workshop has enjoyed tremendous success, spanning two decades and providing invaluable training to over 1,000 management scholars. In 2002, he contributed significantly to the establishment of the International Association for Chinese Management Research (IACMR), the largest scholarly association dedicated to the advancement of management research in China. Dr. Farh served as the President of IACMR from 2014 to 2016 and as the Program Chair for its 5th Biennial Conference held in Hong Kong in 2012. His co-edited book with Xiao-Ping Chen and Anne Tsui on research methodology for Chinese management research, published by Peking University Press in 2008 and 2012, emerged as a best-selling method text in graduate management studies in China.
Recognized for his outstanding research contributions, Dr. Farh has been the recipient of several citation awards, including being named as one of the Highly Cited Researchers in Business and Economics worldwide by Clarivate Analytics in 2017, 2018, and 2020. He also received the Journal of Management 2019 Scholarly Impact Award and the Emerald Citations of Excellence Award in 2013 and 2015. In addition, he was honored with the CEIBS Research Excellence Award in 2018 and the CEIBS Medal for Research Excellence in 2019.
Dr. Farh is a sought-after keynote speaker for academic conferences, having delivered speeches at notable events such as the Asian Academy of Management Biennial Conference in 2015, IACMR Biennial Conference in 2016, and Indigenous Research Conference on Leadership and Organizational Change in 2019.
