Memories of Shanghai and China.

At the end of the CEIBS Exchange Programme, inbound exchange students reflected on the things that surprised them, shocked them, charmed them, and would forever be a part of their Shanghai and China memories. They shared their thoughts in two FAQs:

1. Initially, what surprised you most about Shanghai or China?

"That all the cabbies are Formula 1 race car drivers in training!"

- Daniel Kuo
Inbound Exchange Student from Johnson School at Cornell University

"Rooms are bigger, roads are wider, and taxi drivers are crazier than in Hong Kong. I always thought HK was crowded but it is incomparable to the amount of people in People's Square every morning!"

-  Joseph Lin
Inbound Exchange Student from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology

"The great quantity of people in the street at 7a.m. performing leisure activities. They were dancing in groups, singing, playing instruments, etc. It is clearly a society concerned about psychological and physical health, and enjoying community life."

-  Graciela Lechuga Reyna
Inbound Exchange Student from ESADE Business School

"Shanghainese fashion sense, their warm attitude towards visitors, and the scarcity of English speakers. I was also surprised that Ticketmaster sold tickets it did not have and that the Indian students have their own chef!!!"

- Aravind Elango
Inbound Exchange Student from Darden Graduate School of Business Administration, University of Virginia

"The whole city is literally under construction."

- Margaret Moscoe
Inbound Exchange Student from Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto

"In Shanghai, on hot days, I can roll my shirt up to expose my stomach and not be considered weird."

- Graham R Sue
Inbound Exchange Student from Schulich School of Business, York University

"That Shanghai is like home to everyone in the world. It has a little bit of something for everyone."

- Tony Cheung
Inbound Exchange Student from Schulich School of Business, York University

"The size and sheer quantity of buildings. I remember feeling instantly small."

-  Mayra Alvarado
Inbound Exchange Student from The Fletcher School, Tufts University

"What a great city to get lost in!"

- Morgan Mcgilvray
Inbound Exchange Student from Melbourne Business School, the University of Melbourne

2. What impressed you the most about Shanghai or China?

"Although China is one nation, the people of different cities and regions of China have their own culture, character and wisdom. Shanghai is a magnet city that attracts people from all over China and all over the world. My stay in Shanghai has been a priceless experience, learning from and understanding people from all over China and all over the world."

- Steven Kao
Inbound Exchange Student from Stern School of Business, New York University

"An exchange student came over to CEIBS, and had a time like you wouldn't believe. For the parties enthralled, and the staff in the hall, kept him supplied with cold REEBS!"

- Daniel Tudor
Inbound Exchange Student from Manchester Business School, the University of Manchester

"The fact that you had people using all sort of transportation modes in a seemingly chaotic way but no accidents seemed to happen. It is something I would describe as 'controlled chaos'".

- Sebastian Llobera
Inbound Exchange Student from IESE Business School

"The relativity of prices. In any purchases, lots of bargaining is required. Overall, the negotiation process was extremely useful in understanding the Chinese culture more deeply."

- Agostino De Angelis
Inbound Exchange Student from Schulich School of Business, York University

"The number of spectacular travel destination cities within China other than the ones I had already heard of. You could spend all your free time traveling around China and still not see everything this amazing country has to offer."

- Alan Burchell
Inbound Exchange Student from IESE Business School

"Shanghai is a city full of opportunities and energy. There are so many things going on day and night. Everybody seems to have found what they wanted. However, do they really know what they want or are they just influenced by the people around them?"

- Kunruen Chi
Inbound Exchange Student from Waseda Business School, Waseda University

"A relaxing and rewarding experience with an amazing group of energetic spirits at CEIBS. A good multi-cultural experience with both local and international students."

- Lun Yuk Chan
Inbound Exchange Student from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology

"In this country, anything is possible! During my time in Greater China I was impressed with its incredible diversity – every day can excite you or scare you...So you have to be prepared for a whole bunch of new experiences."

-  Marcin Miszkiewicz
Inbound Exchange Student from the Warsaw School of Economics (SGH)

"Before we say 再见 and take off towards our final destination, there is much to be appreciative of about our time spent in China. Namely, your hospitality, friendship and (let us not forget) your willingness to put up with us in group projects. (We are not like that normally, really!) Thank you and Cheers!"
